Here is our list of survey questions:
Where is your school located? What is your area like?
My younger sister and I go to a school called Ambrosoli International School and it's located on the edge of a swamp in Kampala, Uganda. There are palm trees, monkeys, crested cranes and wildlife all around us and we are in the middle of the capital city of Uganda. It is near to our house so we can walk to school every day but sometimes we drive with our parents.
What learning spaces do you have in your school (number of classrooms, library, music room, number of buildings etc)?
There are 13 classrooms, a music room in 4 buildings. Our school is under construction as they build a whole new building that will be ready next fall.
What outdoor and indoor recreation areas/facilities do you have?
Outside we have a football (soccer) field, an outdoor pavilion where we hold our school assemblies, jungle gyms, play areas, basketball court. Everything is outdoors because we are on the equator and the weather is always warm every day. It never snows but sometimes rains. We use an outdoor swimming pool down the road for swimming lessons and swim club every week.
Do you have any special before, during, or after school programs at your school?
We have clubs and sport squads after school every day from Monday to Thursday. We have a farmers market and assembly every Friday morning and we have a healthy snack on Friday afternoons. We have outdoor concerts and plays and movies as special events during each term.
What do you learn in school, and in which language(s)?
We learn everything we learn in Canada but in English. My sister Beatrice and I were in French Immersion school in Toronto before we came to Uganda last summer so its good, ok, to have school in English now. Just about everyone speaks English and there are kids from Uganda and all over the world in my class. There are kids from India, Korea, China, Uganda, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Israel, France and the US in my grade 4 class.
Does your school make use of technology (computers, Smartboards, laptops, ipads, televisions, etc)? About how many of each?
We have a computers lab with about 20 computers and 1 television but nothing like the other stuff.
How many students attend your school? How many in your grade? In your class? How many adults work at your school?
There are about 250 kids at the school and about 40 students in my grade and 19 in my class. There are about 40 adults.
What is your school’s schedule (start and end times, length and number of breaks, length of school year)?
School starts at 8:00 am and goes until 2:15 pm and then clubs go until 3:05 pm and sports squads go until 4:05 pm. We have a morning break at 10am, lunch at 11:45 and no afternoon break. School year goes from end of August until end of June.
What are your school’s rules?
You have to put your hand up to talk and respect others and your teachers.
What do you wear to school?
We wear uniforms. Boys and girls wear shorts and polo shirts but wear special tshirts and shorts for Physical Education days and we take school swimsuits when we do swimming.
Does your school have a cafeteria? Or, a hot lunch program? What kinds of food do students eat at school?
Yes, the school has a hot lunch program. We get posho, matoke, rice, beans, chapati, cabbage, fish, chicken, lasagne, pizza, spaghetti. Lots of fresh fruits, cake for dessert.
Do you celebrate any special days at your school (100s Day, Crazy Hair Day, Backwards Day, Sports Day, holidays)?
We celebrate Ugandan Day, UN Day, we have a full day sports tournament day every term and lots of theme days for dressing up. We celebrated Movember where we painted moustaches on all the kids and teachers faces.
What do you do for fun at school?
I like to play on the monkey bars and hang out with my friends.
What do you do after school?
I go to clubs after school, go to people's houses to play with friends, go for tennis lessons, play with my toys and play in the yard at the house.
